Who we are
About Us
A Maltese association for people who write, people who read, and people who are only beginning to suspect they have something to say.
Our identity
Creative Writers' Alliance Malta is an association based in Mosta that brings together people with a shared interest in creative writing and literary expression. Our name is deliberate: we are an alliance — a gathering of equals — rather than a school or a publisher. Members and friends of the Alliance include those who write in English, in Maltese, and in the other languages that are now part of everyday life on these islands.
Our emblem carries the Maltese cross above an open book and a quill. It is a plain statement of where we stand and what we care about: this place, the page, and the patient work of putting one word after another.
Our purpose
We exist to encourage creative writing, reading and storytelling, and to make room for people to develop their craft in the company of others. Writing is often solitary; improving at it rarely is. The Alliance offers a setting where drafts can be shared, questions can be asked, and good work can be recognised without ceremony.
Our stated focus is creative writing, literary development, reading appreciation, writing education and literary community engagement. The precise scope of our activities is governed by the association's own statute, and we describe on this website only what we are able to stand behind.
Our approach
Seven commitments shape how we work:
- Creative exploration — trying forms, voices and subjects without fear of getting it wrong.
- Educational development — practical learning that leaves writers better equipped than before.
- Respectful exchange — feedback that is honest, specific and kind.
- Literary appreciation — reading widely and generously, including work unlike our own.
- Community participation — welcoming newcomers as readily as experienced authors.
- Accurate communication — saying clearly what is happening, what is planned, and what is not.
- Continuous learning — reviewing what we do and changing it when it can be done better.
